Newsletter

Eight long reads into this project, one pattern is clear: the good stuff takes time to write and even more time to find. This newsletter exists so you never have to go looking.

One Email, Most Fridays

Subscribers receive a single email on most Friday mornings. No daily drip, no breaking-news blasts, no resends with a different subject line at the weekend. If a week produces nothing worth your attention, the email simply does not go out, and we consider that a feature rather than a failure. Expect the whole thing to read in under five minutes, with links out to the full essays when a topic deserves the deep treatment.

Inside Every Issue

Each edition follows the same simple architecture, so you always know what you are getting:

  • Lead note. A short editorial on one idea from economics, markets, or policy that explains something happening right now, written specifically for the newsletter and published nowhere else.
  • New on the site. Every essay published since the previous issue, with an honest one-line description of who each piece is for, so you can skip what does not apply to you.
  • Chart or table of the week. One figure from our archive or a fresh calculation, with two sentences on how to read it and one on why it matters.
  • Worth your time. Two or three links to work by other writers and researchers that met our bar that week, each with a note on what makes it worth opening.

Privacy, in Plain Terms

Your email address is used to send you this newsletter and for nothing else. We do not sell, rent, trade, or share subscriber data with anyone, we do not append your address to advertising audiences, and we do not track which links you click to build a profile of you. Every issue carries a working unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing takes effect immediately, with no exit survey and no follow-up email asking whether you are sure. Subscription records are stored securely and deleted upon unsubscribe. Chapter and verse live in the Privacy Policy, including the exact procedure for having your data exported or erased, and the Cookie Policy confirms that no advertising cookie ever touches your subscription record. Questions about data handling can be sent through the contact form and are answered within 30 days as a matter of policy.

Recently Covered

To calibrate your expectations, recent editions have walked through the deadweight loss arithmetic behind broad-base tax reform, the reason a dominant firm tolerates its competitive fringe, duration math for a rising-rate year, auction design in electricity markets, and the container-freight statistics that explain half of modern globalization. If those topics sound like your idea of a good Friday, you will feel at home here.

Housekeeping Questions, Answered

Switching addresses? Subscribe with the new address and unsubscribe from the old one; the archive treats them as separate records, so nothing carries over by itself. Nothing arriving? Check the spam and promotions folders first, then add our sending address to your contacts; corporate filters are the usual culprit. Want past issues? Every lead note eventually appears on the site in expanded form, so browsing the latest essays gets you most of the way there. Anything else, the contact page or [email protected] reaches a human.
